December 2016 - Book # 147

84, Charing Cross Road

Chosen by Sandra

Excerpt from cover:

It all began with a letter inquiring about second-hand books, written by Helene Hanff in New York, and posted to a bookshop at 84, Charing Cross Road in London. As Helene's sarcastic and witty letters are responded to by the stodgy and proper Frank Doel of 84, Charing Cross Road, a relationship blossoms into a warm and charming long-distance friendship lasting many years.

Book review for 84 Charing Cross Road
Everyone who:
Likes to read books
Likes to write about books
Likes to talk about books
Likes to buy 2nd hand books
Likes the lavish smell of books
Likes to sniff the pages
MUST read this book
I didn't write this but think it sums it up pretty well. Would add a charming book, about charming characters in a charming time when life moved at a slower pace. Takes place in the high energy city of New York and its counter part  historical London.
Like the juxtaposition of the cities the two main characters are opposites as well. Funny witty New Yorker Helene and formal poised Frank.
A perfect read for a book discussion or a lazy Sunday afternoon! You will feel great after this short read.
